Why It's Slow
The slowness usually isn't the network — it's the site. Specific patterns we see in Nigerian SME sites again and again:
- Massive unoptimised images. 4MB photos served as-is. Compress and resize.
- Bloated WordPress themes. Themes loaded with sliders, animations, and 14 plugins each adding 200KB.
- No caching. Every visitor regenerates pages from scratch.
- Foreign hosting with no CDN. Your server is in Frankfurt; your customer is in Lekki. That's 200ms per round-trip, multiplied by every asset on the page.
The Four-Line Checklist
- Compress all images. Use Squoosh.app or TinyPNG. Most images should be under 200KB.
- Add a free caching plugin. WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or LiteSpeed Cache.
- Enable Cloudflare's free tier. A global CDN with one DNS change. Brings your assets closer to Lagos.
- Remove plugins you don't actively use. Every plugin is a load cost. Audit and prune monthly.
Measure Twice, Fix Once
Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights on a mobile profile. Then on a real phone over 4G. The difference between Lighthouse score and real-world speed is often where the bodies are buried.
